Vermont looks West while pondering legal pot
Progressive Senator David Zuckerman has faith in the Vermont Legislature’s ability to become the first in the country to legalize recreational marijuana.
Zuckerman said he will introduce a bill in the coming week treading where lawmakers in other states have feared to go. In the four states and District of Columbia that have legalized recreational cannabis, it was voters at the ballot box, not lawmakers, who changed the law.
But those cases have revealed a disconnect between lawmakers and constituents.
In Colorado, where voters approved legalization in November 2012 by a 55-45 margin, lawmakers lagged far behind their constituents with only two out of 100 legislators favoring an end to the prohibition on pot.
