Microdosing 101

 In Cannabis Education, Dispensaries, Lifestyle

What is microdosing? Microdosing is the utilization of small doses of cannabinoids, generally 1-5 milligrams, to provide symptom relief without overmedicating. Consuming more cannabinoids than you need can be wasteful, intoxicating or both. Start Low & Go Slow.

Why practice microdosing? More is not always better. Each person must experiment to find which dose provides them with the right amount of relief without causing adverse effects such as intoxication or impairment. Using microdosing makes the experimentation process with THC much more comfortable because it removes the risk of intoxication. It can also reduce the amount you spend on cannabis or hemp products because you will have established your dose and you can make informed decisions about your purchases.

Who can benefit from microdosing?: Microdosing is a great tool for cannabis beginners who are trying to determine their Minimum Effective Dose (MED), that which will provide symptom relief without intoxication or adverse effect. It allows the consumer to gradually titrate their dose up drop by drop, or milligram by milligram, until they feel relief and then again until they feel a slight impairment. This is the place to stop. For instance, a small amount of THC can reduce anxiety, too much can cause it. Microdosing is also great for those who live active lives. Using periodic microdoses may relieve your symptoms enough to allow you to participate fully in your daily work or family life without impairment.

Tips for how to successfully microdose:

  • Purchase cannabis products from a trusted dispensary that offers lab tested products formulated for milligram content of cannabinoids. All CVD and SVW products are lab tested to guarantee consistent cannabinoid content.
  • Begin with 1-2.5 milligrams of a particular cannabinoid and wait the suggested time between doses. This can vary for each person, but the general guidelines for different methods of consumption are as follows:
          • Inhalation: 15 minutes
          • Topical: 30 minutes
          • Sublingual: 30-60 minutes
          • Edible: 90-120 minutes
  • Be patient during this process and truly listen to yourself. Pay attention to the cues that your body and mind are giving to you. This takes practice. The more you do it, the better you get at it.
  • Track your experience in a journal, specifying the amount that you took, the method of consumption, the times that you took them and the effects that resulted. Note also how you felt before you consumed so that you can make accurate comparisons. Whether you were tired, hungry, anxious, etc., before you consumed can influence how your body metabolizes the product and hence, change the outcomes.

When is the best time to experiment with microdosing?

As with any experimentation with cannabis, it is best done in the comfort of your home when you have the freedom to pay attention to yourself and when you are only responsible for your own well being. Weekends, evenings and days off are ideal occasions. Having a trusted companion nearby to assist you can be a comforting addition to this process.

Which products are best suited to microdosing?

We provide a variety of products to help you with this process. Below are some examples with instructions on how to determine dose:

  • Tinctures: These products offer the most flexibility in dosing because it can be done drop by drop. For each of our 1oz bottles formulated for 300mg of cannabinoids, each drop contains a half of a milligram of THC. For the 1:1 CBD to THC tincture, this will be a quarter of a milligram each of CBD and THC. Our 500mg formula contains just under 1 milligram of cannabinoids per drop. Tinctures can be taken directly under the tongue or in a glass of water.
  • Mary’s Medicinals Transdermal Gel Pens: Each gel pen contains 100mg of cannabinoids that can be precisely dispensed in 2mg doses. The gel is applied topically to an area of the body with veinous exposure and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream for systemic relief. Wait at least 30 minutes between applications. The pens are available in 4 varieties: CBD, CBN and Indica or Sativa THC.
  • Micromints: Each mint is formulated with 2.5mg of THC. 30 mints per tin.
  • Sea Salt Caramels: Our new formulation is 10mg per caramel with 4 caramels/pack. Each caramel can easily be portioned into 4, 2.5mg doses of THC for a total of 16 doses per pack.
  • Strawberry Sour Gummies: 5mg THC/gummie, 30 per container. Each gummie can be easily cut in half to provide 60 doses at 2.5mg.
  • Organa Brands Vape Cartridges: Inhalation is the least precise method of microdosing  but it can be done. Our vape cartridges make it easier because we provide THC, CBD and CBN content on each package. Depending on the product you choose, each “perfect puff” (on average an 8 second inhale indicated by the flashing light on the battery when that time is reached) contains 2-4mg of formula. “Perfect puff” guidelines for each formula are as follows:
                • O.riginal: 2mg per perfect puff
                • Reserve: 4mg per perfect puff
                • Craft Reserve: Minimum of 4mg per perfect puff. Can vary based on power of inhale

For example, a half gram Reserve Cartridge that contains 360mg of THC will on average contain 125 doses at 2.8mg of THC per dose (500mg of formula divided by 4mg per puff = 125 doses. 360mg of THC divided by 125 doses = 2.88mg/dose)
